As an aussie, I personally think that Australia is the one missing out on the benefits that the French can contribute not only to the australian economy but also to the australian culture. There are a lot of Italians, Greeks and English living here but very little French. C'est dommage parce que je prefere les francais que les autres.
I agree with you totally, Sharon. It's a shame we haven't more French people around us (and not just for the great restaurants & bakeries we miss - there are many regional cities I know around Victoria who have nothing like this and would benefit a great deal by even this simple addition).
And then the cultural aspects, yes, I agree again. I know a lot of regional cities trying to establish a more 'chic' image for themselves...build fancier hotels, have restaurants with more exotic tastes, B & B's spring up everywhere...why don't they just invite some French and do a proper job of it ??? hehe (I've read some of those regional immigration pamphlets and, sadly, I know it's nowhere that simple, especially when Melbourne is still classified as a 'regional migration centre' rather than a city one).

I think the french community here need more support - have people who work in government offices or in immigration or even as migration agents.
I'm very surprised how easy it seems for people from Arab and Asian countries to live in Australia. I don't believe the Australian gov't is less strict with these countries (the opposite in fact). They just have more people working on their behalf ie immigration agents who specialises in cases from these countries.
Alors, any french migrants interested in getting a migration agency licence?? Hhhhmmm... it is an idea worth considering...
Hmm, but I think the authorities might get a bit suspicious of that...slight bias from French toward French.
But an Aussie like us might look quite ok to them for the job (not realizing we'd have just as much bias toward the French
....I am in fact in need of a new career (though I think unless I move 100 kms right into Melbourne, I'm unlikely to find one of this description!)
I'd better stick to International/Tourism I think, nice idea though it is.....
