Australians love a celebration and you'll never see a party quite like an Australia Day in Sydney. Australia's national day, which commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, is the largest one-day event in New South Wales.
The city is abuzz with festivity. Hundreds of thousands of spectators pack the harbour foreshore throughout the entire day to watch all the favourite annual events - the Ferrython, the Tall Ships Race, the Flags Afloat Parade among others.

Ferries decorated in flags, banners and streamers dashing up the harbour towards the finish line under Sydney Harbour Bridge are quite a sight to see. The Australia Day Regatta, the oldest sailing regatta in the world, held every year since 1837, is another famous tradition.

The excitement continues on land. Head to Hyde Park for the acclaimed Great Australian Bite Gourmet Food and Wine Fair and concerts. You can even witness the emotional Citizenship Ceremony by the Lord Mayor.

Darling Harbour is another centre for festivities. There's a spectacular food and wine fair at Tumbalong Park, live concerts at the Aquashell and a thrilling waterskiing extravaganza at Cockle Bay.

Sydney's top cultural institutions such as The Mint, Reserve Bank and the Australian Museum also open their doors with special exhibitions and performance programs.

And to conclude the day, you'll see Sydney's skies light up with spectacular fireworks over Darling Harbour and Sydney Harbour - a perfect finale to Australia's national day.
