Stend, si vous parlez des deux époques des essais nucléaires dans le Pacifique, alors oui, les Français n'étaient guère populaires. Rassurez-vous: cela est oublié depuis belle lurette.

Ben moi je dirais qu'ils nous aiment bien les Ozi. Tout le monde essaie de me balbutier deux mots en Francais depuis qu'ils savent d'ou je viens, et contrairement a d'autres gens originaires d'autres pays, il n'y a pas d'a priori negatif a l'egard des Francais. Et puis la France j'ai l'impression que ca devient un peu un ideal de la culture rafinee et du savoir vivre. Donc pas de souci pour nous. Par contre, ca a l 'air d'etre une autre histoire pour les Chinois (remarque personelle). Va savoir Charles.

Ben, je suis australien, et je peux vous assurer qu'on aime bien les frogs ici Comme Tetenbas l'a remarqué, si un australien rencontre un français ici, il va essayer, sans doute, de montrer tout ce qu'il connaît de la langue française (qui doit être assez c***** pour les français, je pense, mais bon...)

Alors, oui, faut pas s'inquiéter - les essaies nucléaires sont bien finis, et, heureusement pour vous les Français, l'Australie a la mémoire bien courte!!

Non c'est pas c***** mais la plupart du temps ils te disent un truc et toi tu comprends pas a cause de l'accent qui tue.
Et la ca jette un peu un froid.

enfin heureusement les memes mots reviennent, bonjour, merci, sacrebleu , je parle un petit peu le francais, etc etc.

Pour revenir sur la question de Stend : y'a pas de problèmes de racisme envers les noirs en Australie ?
Tous ceux (en France) à qui j'ai posé la question ne me répondent pas vraiment, simplement ils me disent "Tu sais, avec les aborigènes qui sont noirs, c'est pas joyeux...".

J'aimerai donc bien savoir ce qu'il en est réellement et savoir ce que vous en pensez.

Well, I can just say from my experience of Aborigines in a non-traditional, non-outback setting, in the city where I live, I don't believe that people are racist towards them, but there is definitely some bias and prejudice.

I think a lot of people look at Aboriginals in our society (particularly those with many children) and think they're just there getting government welfare.
But by the same token, if know of white single mothers with 6 children or more, we're also likely to point the finger and say 'they're having more kids to get extra money'.

And we may look down on Aborigines who don't have jobs, but we also look at our own members in society and I think still tend to label long term unemployed people as "Dole Bludgers" who don't want to work, without knowing their story.

Back to the Aboriginal issue, mon mari et moi, we have a friend who became involved with a local Aboriginal woman, who was one of 16 children, all with different fathers, and I think she probably got a lot of bias from that, from people who don't understand their large family, and especially extended family situations.
Even knowing about Aboriginal issues, one still wonders, if this is the way they would be or if this is the way becoming part of our society has changed them for the worst, and they get into no-win situations.
Now our friend is permanently involved, as the father of 1/2 aboriginal 8 month old twins with another on the way, plus her original 3 small aboriginal children, and friends just don't know what to do or what to make of it.

We have some very talented Aboriginals in our city, especially artists,
several of whom have won awards (including business awards) and command quite high prices for any of their work.
On the other hand, Aborigines in general have a very low tolerance to alcohol (especially large amounts) and there have been cases of Aboriginal locals bar brawling at night, including women, to the extent where they have been thrown out of hotels and banned from coming back.
So there is the combination of the civilized and the uncivilised, but I still don't think people judge them as one - they're more likely to know by word of mouth which families tend to have the troublemakers, and which don't.

So sometimes there is reason for the bias, sometimes not.
But I haven't seen or heard about any open racism in my city, and there are approx 600 in the community, of various mixes as well as full aboriginals.

Just some of my thoughts what I think will always be a difficult issue.

je suis allé y'a 10 ans (ça date mais bon, mururoa n'a tout de meme pas braqué tous les australiens contre les p'tits frenchy) à perth pdt 2 mois et je n'ai jamais eu de probleme.
et comme le dit choopy notre accent n'est pas un handicap.

If anything, the burning down of the premises of Perth's honorary French Consul and the malicious flooding of the Federation of the Alliances Françaises building in Canberra, just to mention the most spectacular Australian reactions towards the atomic tests would have unhinged the majority of the "p'tits frenchy" down under. I am proud to say that this majority marched and protested along with Australians. We were then dealing with anger and not so much with racism.

Chinese, Irish, Japonese, Italian, Greek (in historical order) and others have suffered the butt of discrimination in Australia. The repel of the White Australia Policy did forge the way towards a multicultural society as we have it today. I honestly believe that racism does not exist in Australia, while there may be a rabid few.

As for the original custodians of this brown land gird by the seas, no amount of guilt or money will ever mend the damage done.
