Melbourne enjoys a temperate climate with a cool winter. Average minimum temperatures in the winter months of June through to August are 6-7 degrees Celcius . The summer season is from December through to February.

The climate of Melbourne is characterized by a low average humidity, moderate rainfall, and moderate winds. The most marked feature is the Summer hot wind. A hot wind is always a northerly wind, and the highest temperature generally occurs a little before the wind changes to West or South-West. When this takes place a sudden drop to a comparatively low temperture sometimes follows within a few minutes. These hot winds, however, are not frequent, only averaging eight or nine per year.

It is unusual to have a hot period lasting more than three days. When it does happen it is generally in February or March and is followed by a "cool change". The characteristic of our hot weather is that it is usually extremely dry.

Mean Melbourne temperatures:
Jan Feb Mar Apr May June Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
Daily Maximum (Celcius) 26 26 24 20 17 14 13 15 17 20 22 24
Daily Minimum (Celcius) 14 15 13 11 9 7 6 7 8 9 11 13

And the best time of year in Melbourne (and Ballarat) in my opinion, is Autumn (not just for the colours, but the milder temperatures than summer, but more stable conditions and less rainy and variable than Spring (which is usually very changeable indeed).

It's nice to have March and April in the 20's degree range (with the occasional 30) instead of the 30s of mid summer.

It's my favourite season for camping, because you can usually depend on being able to plan ahead easily and get out in the great outdoors and it hardly ever rains. The 8 year drought we're in the middle of makes Autumn even dryer than usual. It may even be a rather dry winter too.

Even now in mid May, (and happens some other years too) we're still getting some brilliantly blue and sunny days and around 15-20 degrees (and some days lower) but with cold nights and mornings.

By June, the temperatures will rarely rise above 15 any more and it's just downhill for a while and there will be many less of these great days.

Hope this helps a bit.

Mille souhaits
Kate

I really don't know why many French people think Melbourne winters are 'vachement froid' when I see that in France each winter, you have a lot of snow and some days of less than 0 deg C.
And compared to a Canadian winter, Melbourne winters are like a heat-wave!
It should be several years before you start to feel that Melbourne winters are cold, as it's all relative in comparison to where you're from.

Ici, the coldest you're ever likely to get is an occasional -5 deg C frost in Spring, which is really icy but usually then the rest of the day is nice and sunny which makes up for that.

And only a couple of days snow per year, with some more on the mountains outside Melbourne.

It's been more than 5 years now since I've seen snow more than 1 cm thick on the ground, and that only lasted a couple of hours.

I agree, sometimes the wind can be very cold indeed and you have to have clothes for all seasons (but it feels colder than the temperature really is in reality).

Good on you Kate. One would think that some of these young Frenchmen and women were geriatics seeking, as they are, all year round tropical heat. Sufferers Paradise can be theirs for keeps. By the way, I have read somewhere that Melbourne's weather was akin to that of Bordeaux.

Ah, now I get it. Merci Alysum. I remember now a couple of years ago a French exchange student visitor told us he'd arrived here with nothing but t-shirts (no wonder he was cold then!)...Think he'd been watching episodes of 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours' and thought it would always be warm and like living at the beach....he could laugh about it a few months later...

Bye
Esz

Of course Melbourne is like the North Pole and the Melbourne Weather Bureau is the joke of the world for its fanciful temperature records. In fact, we Melbournians like to call our State "Little Siberia" and comparing it to Lyons and its region is far out. Still, we enjoy skiing down Collins Street most of the year on our way to work, all wrapped up in kangaroo furs (that's why the kangaroo population is declining so fast!). Last Christmas was particularly delightful and since there was still heaps of snow around, a huge snowman was built on the steps of Parliament House; Mums and Dads and the Kiddies all loved it. Many activities take place on the Yarra River which is permanently frozen, ranging from football on ice to open air Opera performances. Thank God we are a sporty and cultivated lot and we make the most of icy winds and below zero temperatures!

Skying in melbourne is getting more and more expensice unfortunatelly. I remember prices fro the lifts were totally jacked up last year after they rebuilt the royal parade to make it more sloppy.

Seriously you can't complain about the weather in melbourne. It sure is weird and unforecastable (nice word), but it's not that cold at all. Man I'm coming from Moselle (north east of france), so it's pretty weird not to wear 4 beanies, and 7 jumpers in winter.
