The Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRI) is Queensland’s second independent Institute of Medical Research. MMRI’s Director, Prof Derek Hart, and its Scientists, are developing technologies to provide biological treatments for cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases, asthma, otitis media, surgical adhesions amongst others.
A Senior Research Fellow is sought to work as a Team Leader. The laboratory researches surface-active phospholipids (lung surfactant), and the physical properties they impart when bound to tissue. Much of the laboratory’s research has led to successful clinical trials with further trials pending. In this role, you will direct the laboratory’s research, with the option of continuing existing projects or of pursuing your own research in surfactant. Relevant doctoral qualifications or equivalent accreditation and standing together with subsequent research experience is required. You will have a demonstrated record of publications and of obtaining external funding. Special consideration will be given to medical graduates who wish to combine clinical work with research. Proven collaborative and leadership skills are essential.

HOURS:
It is recognised that the nature of experimental science/research may require some flexibility and that on occasions evening or weekend work may be required.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
To make independent or original contributions to the research effort within field of expertise.
To contribute to the overall productivity of the Laboratory’s research programme and that of the Institute as a whole.
To exercise leadership in research, including teaching postgraduate students.
To head the team responsible for: fundamental research into surface-active phospholipid (surfactant) and for developing and patenting the intellectual property arising from that research.
To obtain external research funding.
DUTIES:
Specific duties required may include:
The conduct of research for the publication of that research in high quality journals and presentation at seminars and conferences.
Supervision of research-support and administrative staff involved in the staff member’s research.
Supervision, where appropriate, of the research of less senior research-only academic staff.
Promotion of research collaborations with outside bodies.
Preparation of research proposal submissions to external funding bodies.
Significant practical role in research projects including, leadership of research teams and management of projects, including maintenance of project plans.
Responsibility for the oversight of financial management of grants received for research projects.
Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the fields of expertise.
Occasional contributions to the teaching program within the field of the staff members research.
Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects within the field of the staff member’s area of expertise.
Various research-related administrative functions.
Attendance at journal clubs and results meetings associated with the research or the work of the organisational (Laboratory) unit to which the research is connected. Attendance at Institute or departmental and/or faculty meetings with a major role in planning and committee work.
PRIMARY DELEGATIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The Senior Research Fellow (Team Leader) will be accountable to the Director of the Institute.
Scientific Activity will be undertaken according to the guidelines established by the Director and the Institute’s Scientific Committee.
The use of Institute property, equipment and technical support facilities will respect the guidelines established by the Institute’s Scientific Manager and the “Facilities Committee”.
Preparation of applications for funding, commercial interactions and financial management of grants shall adhere to the process established by the Institute’s Business Manager and Commercial/Administrative Committee.
Management of staff shall respect the arrangements established by the Business Manager.
Delegation of tasks to a junior member of the team should be commensurate with that individual’s skills and job description.
The Senior Research Fellow will liaise appropriately with other responsible senior staff when delegating tasks to members of another team.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Senior Research Fellow will normally have a relevant doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation. Research experience is essential and will require a demonstrated strong record of publications, conference papers, reports and/or professional and/or technical contributions in the relevant discipline area. A good knowledge of the physical sciences would be an advantage.
