Australia A defeat French Barbarians in Bordeaux

Australia A celebrate victory over French Barbarians in Bordeaux
An enthusiastic, entertaining and predominantly young Australia A side defeated the French Barbarians 42-12 in Bordeaux tonight, running in five tries to two in an impressive display against quality opposition.

Leading 9-0 after 16 minutes, thanks to three penalty goals to fullback Cameron Shepherd, Australia A were set upon by a number of rolling mauls, one of which finishing in the first try of the match to the Barbarians Number 6 Julien Puricelli.

Hitting back with a try to captain David Croft 10 minutes later, Australia then conceded a second to a rolling maul, but it would be the last points scored by the home team with the young Australia A side lifting the tempo just before half time.

A brilliant individual effort and try from hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau in the 38th minute, saw Australia A extend their lead to 23-12, and then with three unanswered tries in the second half, the 25,000 strong crowd was treated to some entertaining and committed rugby by the young Australians.

With 13 players under the age of 24, and three of them yet to even play a Super 12 match, the 30 point victory was a valuable start to the 2005 Spring Tour, and one Coach Eddie Jones was happy with.

"We're pretty pleased with the effort and I think we showed enough tonight to indicate that this group of players has the potential to go further in the game. How far further the next 12 months will decide for a lot of them, but certainly there is some good raw potential among this group of players," said Jones.

"Maybe we've been able to find some players who have the potential to go further, so we'll work very hard on this tour to develop them and whether they play Test rugby on this tour or not will depend on how quickly they develop."

"There are some players there who showed some good skill in certain aspects of their game but in other aspects, that are more important in Test matches, they need to have a considerable improvement to be Test players."

"I think we saw today a lot of players who will be in the World Cup Squad. How they develop will vary, but I think if we can get five, six, seven or eight of those players coming through to be genuine Test players then we'll be pretty happy."

Asked who he thought were the players that stood out the most, Jones says he was impressed with a number of them.

"There were a range of players who played pretty well. Obviously the hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau showed that he's a skillful player, but still has some work to do on his set piece," said Jones.

"I thought the whole back row acquitted themselves pretty well. Scott Fava at Number 6 and David Croft at openside flanker were good, and then Leroy Houston who has got some good ball running ability."

"In the backs, I thought most of them played pretty well. Lloyd Johansson is a young kid who certainly has the potential to be a much better player than he is at the moment."

Good in attack and committed in defence, the only hiccup for Australia A were the two rolling mauls that resulted in tries to the French Barbarians, a positive according to Jones.

"It's an area we need to get more and more experience in. Those young guys don't play against sides like that so that is a good experience for them and I thought at the end of the game they started to adjust better and make better decisions."

Six Australia A players, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Al Campbell, Brett Sheehan, Nic Henderson, David Croft and Lachlan MacKay will all return to Australia tomorrow, while hooker Stephen Moore will travel with the Wallaby Squad to Marseille with Adam Freier still in doubt with a groin injury.

Australia A 42
(Tatafu Polota-Nau, David Croft, Adam Ashley-Cooper, John Roe, Mat Rogers tries, Cameron Shepherd 4 conversions, 3 penalty goals)
defeated French Barbarians 12
( Julien Puricelli, Yannick Forester tries, Jean-Federic Dubois 1 conversion)

French Rugby, mate!

Sacre bleu! This is French Rugby!

IT had all the trappings of a French farce...

A train trip across the south of the country that took two hours longer than expected, an arrival in Bordeaux to find the team hotel had only one lift in operation and half the building reduced to a glorified construction site for a full-blown refurbishment.

To cap the black comedy on day one of the Wallabies' preparations for Saturday's Test with France, there was the training run at a suburban ground under struggling floodlights and with no sign of the scrum machine Australia were promised for the session.

Coach Eddie Jones, who unveiled his Test side by running Matt Giteau almost exclusively at five-eighth and Mat Rogers on the left wing, should have been steaming at the inconvenience.

Instead, he took perverse pleasure in his players being removed from the comfort zone they enjoy at home in the confines of their five-star training base on the northern NSW coast.

At their semi-permanent Coffs Harbour resort home, players do not have to climb three flights of fire stairs to get to their rooms. In Bordeaux it's do the walk or wait half an hour in the queue for the phone-booth sized elevator set on a go-slow pace.

While denying the Wallabies are pampered, Jones did concede their carefully planned and programmed lives when training and playing in Australia may help explain why their overseas record has bordered on the embarrassing in recent seasons.

"We traditionally play well in Australia because we always prepare well and we're in control of the conditions," he said.

"Maybe one of the reasons we haven't done so well overseas is because we can't control everything and we allow those things to affect us.

"That's why this trip has been so useful.

"Things haven't gone perfectly but the players have been very upbeat and positive.

"And it's important they become comfortable in these conditions [with the World Cup in France in 2007].

"It is one of the more difficult countries to tour. It's so different ... the food, the language, everything.

"We were promised a scrum machine today and there's nothing here. They're the things you've just got to get used to. You've got to be good enough to overcome them."

Jones also defended his players against any suggestion they should rough it more when on home soil.

"I don't think we pamper our guys," he said. "If you look at the way we treat our players compared to other international sides, we're middle rating."

After five days in Montpellier, where the Wallabies will have their primary base during the next World Cup, the squad headed west to the famous Bordeaux wine-growing region by train - a major mode of transport for the 2007 tournament.

Tomorrow they head back east for the Test in Marseilles, a match Jones is convinced will be the toughest of the five games on a tour that opened with on-field action overnight as Australia A took on the French Barbarians.

"France are a bit like South Africa," said Jones. "They play well above themselves at home and both of them are teams we haven't done well against away from home.

"I think France will be exceptionally hard to beat at the World Cup."

A decision on whether injured hooker Adam Freier stays on tour after straining a groin muscle last week will be made today.

Giteau at fly half for Gregan's record-breaking Test

Image
Matt Giteau ... preferred to Mat Rogers at fly half

Matt Giteau has been handed the key fly half role ahead of Mat Rogers for the Wallabies' opening European tour Test against France this weekend in Marseilles.

Rogers has been named with Wendell Sailor as one of two wingers, with Chris Latham at full-back.

Captain and half-back George Gregan will earn his 115th cap to overtake former England prop Jason Leonard as rugby's most capped player.

The 32-year-old Zambian-born World Cup winner will be seeking to end a run of five successive defeats for the Wallabies against a France side that will be captained by another centurion Fabien Pelous, who will win his 102nd cap.

Elsewhere coach Eddie Jones has paired Lote Tuqiri and Morgan Turinui in the centres.

Tuqiri said playing in the midfield may allow him to have a bigger impact in attack.

"I probably get more ball than I probably do on the wing and have a chance to dominate a game more so than I have in the past, getting involved earlier ... getting the ball when I want it," he said.

Giteau and Rogers were vying for the number 10 jersey with Australia's two most experienced playmakers, Stephen Larkham and Elton Flatley, both at home injured.

Jones has also retained the back row trio who played in their last defeat to the All Blacks and he will be looking to them - especially the experienced duo of Phil Waugh and George Smith - to stop the French backs.

However Jones seemed to be more worried about one of his bugbears concerning the French - their tendency as he sees it to illegally shield the ball carrier in the maul.

"They will rumble," he said of the French. "They will keep the ball camouflaged. In any other part of the game you are penalised so why do we allow it in that situation (the rolling maul)?"

Physical test

Jones said that he expected a tough and physical contest but his players would be ready.

"The French are going to be physical and we have got to be physical and outmuscle them and then use our skill," he said.

Jones has come under pressure during the recent poor run which also called into question the discipline in the camp after one player was sent home early from South Africa and two others were disciplined over an incident in a night club.

Jones, though, said the players had been exemplary in training.

"Their attitude and enthusiasm in training leading up to the tour and this week has been pleasing. They have stayed focused and really want to play well against France and set the tone for the remainder of the tour.

"There are a number of players coming back into the starting line-up and everyone is keen to continue on from where the Australia A side left off."

Australia A beat the French Barbarians 42-12 earlier in the week.

Ah ! Ah !

On a donc :

Sebast : 96
Laurentd : 95
Sisko : 94
Effisk : 93
Gil : 91
Marclaf : 90
Cuchi-cuchi : 89
Storky : 89
diox : 87
Ben64 : 85
Gillou3132 : 82
Marcellie : -11
Ozman : -12
Alysum : -14

A +

OZMAN...terre d'ovalie...
