...."But on Australia Day, what does it actually mean to the average Aussie to be Australian?
According to a recent study by the Commonwealth Bank, most Australians (90%) believe the quality that most defines them is their down to earth attitude.
Our reputation as straight talkers, welcoming and accepting nature, honesty and community mindedness were also values held dear.
When asked about what made them most proud, 90% said watching fellow Australians such as the late conservation campaigner Steve Irwin and Nobel Prize winner Professor Peter Doherty succeed on the world stage.
The same proportion cheered the way Australians come together in times of hardship, such as during the Bali bombings, and the amazing survival of Beaconsfield miners Brant Webb and Todd Russell.
Most also believed it was Australia's reputation for success on the sports field, mateship, sun, sand and surf culture that set Aussies apart from everyone else in the world...."
