Croc hunt continues in flooded Katherine
Friday Apr 7 13:37 AEST
A ranger is on the hunt for dangerous saltwater crocodiles which may have swum into the flooded Northern Territory town of Katherine.

Parks and Wildlife ranger Patrick Carmody said he expected some crocodiles may have moved into the town after it was swamped by floodwaters.

Several wallabies had also been drowned in the flood, although many other animals were safe because they were earlier moved to higher ground, he said.

A freshwater crocodile attacked a teenage boy trapped in a tree by the floods, but he suffered only minor injuries.

WA braces for yet another cyclone
Friday Apr 7 14:44 AEST
A cyclone menacing Western Australia's north looks set to be the fourth to cross the Pilbara coast this year.

The region is bracing itself for the category two Cyclone Hubert, expected cross the WA coast west of Onslow on Friday night or early Saturday.

The weather bureau says at last report Hubert was about 195km north of Onslow and 240km north northwest of Exmouth, moving south, southwest at 12km per hour.

But it was not expected to intensify and may even weaken before reaching land, the bureau said.

Gale-force winds of up to 100kph were forecast along the west Pilbara coast on Friday morning, but more destructive winds were expected in coastal areas between Exmouth and Mardie on in the afternoon or night.

The Karratha, Roebourne, Dampier, Onslow, Exmouth and Mardie communities were placed on blue alert, meaning cyclone damage was likely.

Onslow's senior police officer Sergeant Bill Allan said local residents were prepared for their second cyclone in just over a week, following Cyclone Glenda.

Wild weather predicted for NSW

April 07, 2006
This article from : AAP
MORE wild weather is in store for NSW, with galeforce winds and dangerous surf expected along the coast.

As ski resorts revel in the first snowfalls of the year, and bushfires burn on the south and mid-north coasts, Mother Nature has more up her sleeve.

The Bureau of Meteorology this afternoon issued a severe weather warning for the south coast, Illawarra, metropolitan, Hunter and mid-north coast forecast districts.

Those areas would experience damaging surf conditions tomorrow, with waves of more than five metres, the bureau said.

A gale warning is current for coastal waters south of Ulladulla, and a strong wind warning is in place for waters between Seal Rocks and Ulladulla.

Up to 10cm of snow fell at Perisher Blue yesterday, and resort spokesman Neil Thew said he was hoping for more snow tonight.

"The wind's turned around out of the south so who knows, we could get a bit more tonight," he said.

"The way the clouds are coming up I wouldn't be surprised. Anything can happen in the mountains."

Meanwhile, fire has burnt through more than 600 hectares of bushland in the Great Lakes area, north of Newcastle, and about 3,000 hectares in state forest land around Moruya and Bodalla on the south coast.

Rural Fire Service spokeswoman Meeka Bailey said firefighters were carrying out backburning to contain the blazes, none of which posed a threat to property.

Another small fire was burning in rugged territory near Kangaroo Valley, in the NSW southern highlands, but it was not threatening property, Ms Bailey said.
