I have to agree with you here, hBinh, malheureusement. I'm often annoyed when sport is the opening story on the news, and international events/affairs take second or even 3rd place... mais je crois que je (et ma famille) sont des excellents exemples des vies Australiens normales SANS le sport (sauf pour un peu de 'faiblesse' pour le Formula 1.....et pour mon mari et moi, la petanque aussi
Je suis avec Gerard ici:

we like to own the privilege of running ourselves down (le privilège de nous débiner nous-mêmes), but I suppose we become uncomfortable when others/outsiders are too 'generous' with their criticism of us. Lots of Australian comedy is self-deprecating (dénigrant de soi).
Oui, je crois que c'est un peu comme une famille - we may argue and criticise amongst ourselves, but if somebody from outside joins in, it's quite a different reaction and we're more likely to go into 'defend' mode.

... Aussies who love their footy/sports in general, and who would never ever wish to set foot inside a 'legitimate' theatre, are not culturally deprived or inferior. When some people say "culture", what they really mean is "high [artistic] culture".
Oui, je suis vraiment d'accord avec ca! Well said.

Footy is culture, too. (ben oui) Through another forum on this very site, I have had the pleasure and the privilege to know a young Frenchman who is the coach of an Australian rules footy team in Strasbourg. I've helped him and his club to obtain some assistance from the AFL here, and with Fr. - Eng. translations of submissions. I'm rapt that other countries get a thrill from playing a game that used to be, so insularly, ours alone.
Je suis en train de suivre cette partie du forum avec beaucoup d'interet aussi....I may not follow Aussie rules myself, but the coach seems a battler, hard working, etc - we aussies have a soft spot for those kind of people too, and for helping out where we can.
