Thought I’d start up this little post to bring you bits of news about the Australian Tourism industry, particularly in Victoria, with things like news of new tourist attractions, transport services, and the latest tourism statistics.

I’ll also sometimes include some other useful non-tourism statistics (such as the below current average housing sale figures in Melbourne, which could help give you a bit better idea of the cost of living (or owning property) there.

2/5/04, The Herald Sun, Melbourne.

New figures just released on some of the suburbs of Melbourne in the highest selling turnover range at the moment, and the median house and unit prices there:

In Melbourne, the average house price in the quarter to December 2003 fell by 0.8% from $371,000 to $368,000.

The average apartment price fell 2.1% from $289,000 to $283,000.

Latest property ‘hot spots’.

Present Median prices:
Apartments:

Essendon: $289,000
South Yarra $260,000
Richmond $262,750
Elwood $315,500
Dandenong $150,000

Houses:
Balwyn Nth: $570,000
Richmond $480,000
Kew $733,500
And also with a very high turnover was Werribee @ $214,500

(All these are among the top 10 highest turnover).

Good news for Tourism with jump in visitors
The Ballarat Courier, 1-5-04

The Australian inbound tourism sector is set for a dramatic recovery this year, with the number of international visitors set to rise by almost 10%, a leading forecaster said yesterday.
The Tourism Forecasting Council’s latest report found Australia was set to reverse 3 years of negative growth by welcoming 5.2 million visitors in 2004.
The TFC expects a 9.9% overall rise in inbound visitor numbers, including a 25% jump in arrivals from China leading the way.
The report forecast continued high growth from China, at an average annual rate of 18.5% over the next 10 years.
TFC believes China will become Australia’s 3rd largest market by 2013, after New Zealand and Britain.

After years of sluggish growth, Australia’s domestic tourism sector is predicted to rise by 0.9% growth.

As a comparison, can anybody tell me how many million international visitors France receives each year?

WA Fast train to run a little late
(1-5-04)

The new state-of-the-art Prospector train, which will take passengers from Perth to the Goldfields capital Kalgoorlie at 160 kph will finally come into service on June 28.
Planning and infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced yesterday that the train, which will complete the 653 km trip in less than 6 hours, will come online 7 months after originally scheduled.
The new service was due to be launched last November, but track trials have been ongoing since then.

**Note: at the current time, any train in Australia that can go over 105 km/hr is considered by us a fast train! I'm not sure if there are any other trains which can do 160 km/hr before then (maybe the Qld tilt train but that's it) With the new infrastructure being laid down in so many regions, we've been told it's now possible to use fast train technology on these lines....but it's too expensive/not cost effective :?

“The latest Bureau of Tourism Research figures have found that between 1996 and 2003, internatioal visitors to Victoria jumped by 24% compared to 10% increase among other states and territories combined.

Consistent marketing investment has been a major factor, as have events which have been vitally important in attracting visitors and promoting the state, for example the Formula 1 Grand Prix and Australian Tennis Open.

Between 1999 and 2003, Victoria had a 46% growth in overnight visitor stays, compared to the national average of 17%”

See, je dis "Victoria, no longer the forgotten state!"
