"d*** Smith $2m saves Recherche Bay"
A $2 million pledge from entrepreneur d*** Smith has saved a historically significant site in southern Tasmania from logging.
The high-profile Sydney businessman, who last year paid more than $1 million for a block on the Tasman Peninsula, said he offered the money because he "couldn't believe the area was going to be logged so heavily".
Premier Paul Lennon today announced a plan to ensure the preservation of Recherche Bay, southeast of Hobart.
The private land where French explorers landed in 1792 and 1793 will be purchased for $2.21 million, ending three years of lobbying for its preservation.
Recherche Bay was given National Heritage listing in October last year but federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell failed to halt the plans for logging.
French explorer Bruni d'Entrecasteaux landed at Recherche Bay in 1792 during a search for a missing explorer, then returned for three weeks in 1793.
They made "close and friendly" contact with local Aborigines during their visits & also carried out the first deliberate scientific experiment on Australian soil.
Evidence of a garden and a 20m stone wall discovered in 2003 are the
only identified relics of European exploration of Tasmania in the period before European settlement.
