Heritage move on historic site

06may04

The southeastern Tasmanian bay where French explorer Bruni d'Entrecasteaux landed in 1792-93 has been nominated for the National Heritage list.
A spokeswoman for Federal Environment and Heritage Minister David Kemp said the nomination had been advertised in The Australian on April 2. The 250ha Recherche Bay site, owned by two Tasmanian brothers, has been recommended by the Tasmanian Heritage Council for protection.

D'Entrecasteaux landed at the site in 1792-93 and did botanical and scientific surveys, met indigenous people and cultivated a garden.

The Australian avait consacré six pages à cette histoire il y a environ deux ans. Heureux d'apprendre cette bonne conclusion. Les conservationistes se réjouiront aussi!

The expedition of this "brave compatriote" was despatched in 1791 in search of La Pérouse. D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Bruny Island were respectively named after the surname and Christian name of the navigator. Recherche Bay was named after the vessel commanded by D'Entrecasteaux and Esperance Port after the other vessel of the expedition commanded by Huon de Kermadec.

During their exploration the navigators discovered that Tasmania was separated from Australia by a strait.

D'Entrecasteaux's expedition was the last one in the eighteenth century.

Great Sand. Thanks for bringing this update to attention!

If you'd like to see almost the full story which was published in The Australian last year (Merci beaucoup a Jean-Marie pour le copie), I've put it on my website temporarily so that anybody interested can read it.

And a little more background on the logging subject....

The Tasmanian agriculture sector brings in almost half a billion Australian dollars annually in export $$$, a large amount for an island of 473,000 people.
Today, 40% of Tasmanian lands are declared national parks, and make up part of the World Heritage.
The logging industry and the Government are closely linked because the industry is self-regulated. The forests belong to a local government which has given Gunns pty Ltd a monopoly over trade in woodchips, of which 5.6 million tonnes were exported to Japan this year to make newspapers, almost double that of ten years ago.
Gunns is not only criticised for logging ancient trees, but also for the damaging ecological waste from the forestry industry.

Continuation de l'histoire....avec un bon conclusion (annonce hier)

"d*** Smith $2m saves Recherche Bay"

A $2 million pledge from entrepreneur d*** Smith has saved a historically significant site in southern Tasmania from logging.
The high-profile Sydney businessman, who last year paid more than $1 million for a block on the Tasman Peninsula, said he offered the money because he "couldn't believe the area was going to be logged so heavily".

Premier Paul Lennon today announced a plan to ensure the preservation of Recherche Bay, southeast of Hobart.
The private land where French explorers landed in 1792 and 1793 will be purchased for $2.21 million, ending three years of lobbying for its preservation.

Recherche Bay was given National Heritage listing in October last year but federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell failed to halt the plans for logging.

French explorer Bruni d'Entrecasteaux landed at Recherche Bay in 1792 during a search for a missing explorer, then returned for three weeks in 1793.
They made "close and friendly" contact with local Aborigines during their visits & also carried out the first deliberate scientific experiment on Australian soil.
Evidence of a garden and a 20m stone wall discovered in 2003 are the only identified relics of European exploration of Tasmania in the period before European settlement.
