Les âChefs HuilĂ©sâ
13 October Chifley Plaza Wintergarden
A dozen Francophile chefs gather for an appetizing exhibition of paintings at Chifley Plaza: Kimitaka Azuma (Azuma), Tony Bilson (Bilsonâs), Serge Dansereau (Bathersâ Pavilion), Harunobu Inukai (Galileo), Toshi Ishihara (King 143), Cheong Liew (Grange), Chui Lee Luk (Claudeâs), Matthew Kemp (Balzac), Justin North (Becasse), Dietmar Sawyere (Forty One Restaurant),Warren Turnbull (Cruise), Tetsuya Wakuda (Tetsuyaâs).
The discovery of a new dish does more for the happiness of mankind than the discovery of a star.
Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, Professor of Gastronomy, 1823
When creative culinary geniuses are immortalised on canvas, the public is rewarded with an unique art exhibition. The common denominator of this event is âFrancophiliaâ: all chefs use French cooking techniques, and/or ingredients. Most have trained with renowned French chefs or worked in France.
The âChefs HuilĂ©sâ (French for âchefs in oilâ) exhibition consists of portraits of these Australian Francophile chefs, and second painting depicting an image that inspires them in their culinary endeavours. For some this may be an echo of their origin or an interpretation of a special moment; for others it might be a mentor or even a cheese!
While their food is French-influenced, none of the chefs are French! They are natives of Australia, Canada, England, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Switzerland and China but all have a passion and obsession for excellent food.
The chefsâ stories behind their chosen inspirational image is captured by the commissioned artists chosen by Histoire de Voir. This event calls on Francophiles, food lovers and lovers of art to come and savour delicious moments on canvas.
Most of the selected chefs will prepare a special menu during the exhibition as the exhibition coincides with Good Food Month.
Forty-One Restaurant, located in Chifley Tower where the exhibition is hosted, will prepare a degustation menu based on the exhibited paintings. Azuma, also based in Chifley Tower, will be incorporating foie gras in their traditional Japanese offerings!
Chifley Plaza has generously offered space at the Wintergarden foyer at Chifley Plaza for this event from 13 October till 12 November. Admission to the exhibition is free.
The exhibition will continue at Forty-One Restaurant after 12th November.
A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the paintings will be donated to Christina Noble Childrenâs Foundation, a UK registered charity for the creation of a music and art school for children in Vietnam. Child sponsorship or donations can also be made direct at:
